Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park, which covers 14.763km2, is the worlds’ well known game sanctuary and one of the jewels of Tanzania’s’ wildlife crown. Recently it was proclaimed the seventh“ World Wide Wonder”. “Serengeti” means “endless plains” in Maasai language and within its boundaries are more than 3.000.000 large mammals. About 35 species of plains animals may be seen here including the so called “big five” (buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard and rhino).

In the Serengeti National Park, there are very few remaining Hunting dogs in the Serengeti; originally exterminated as a threat to domestic stock, then victims of canine distemper disease they seem to be making a modest comeback in recent times. The black rhino population of the Serengeti has also developed well in recent years thanks to constant surveillance and the shielding of the animals from the mass tourism. There are now 13 black rhinos in the Moru kopjes area but they may be difficult to see as visitors are only allowed to drive through the area on certain roads.

Serengeti National Park, in May or early June, huge herds of Wildebeest and Zebras begin their spectacular 1.000km (600mils) pilgrimage. In the wake follow the predators as lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and jackals while vultures circle overhead and some of Africas’ biggest crocodiles lying in waiting position in the rivers. Other animals frequently seen in the Serengeti include caracal, civet, bat eared fox, genet cat, giraffe, hippo, honey badger, hydra, mongoose, ostrich, serval cat, Grant & Thomson gazelles, baboon, vervet monkeys and 20 types of antelopes including eland, hartebeest, impala, kudu, reedbuck, roan, topi, waterbuck, dick dick, duicker, klipspringer, oribi etc. There is also a profusion of birdlife over 500 species including eagles, storks, vultures, cranes, owls, secretary birds, harriers, kites, sunbirds etc.
